Fibroadenoma of the Breast
© Steven C.
Immerman, MD, FACS, 2000
This is a benign, firm,
rubbery growth that occurs in the breast. It usually occurs
during the ages from late teens to the thirties, but can occur
later. There is no connection between a fibroadenoma of
the breast and a fibroid tumor of the uterus.
Fibroadenomas of the
breast are usually single. Having one fibroadenoma does not mean
that you will have other fibroadenomas, although it is possible.
Fibroadenomas have no
relationship to breast cancer other than the fact that we have
to biopsy the fibroadenoma to make sure that it is not cancer.
Fibroadenomas do not cause cancer or turn into cancer. We
often don't know that a lump is a fibroadenoma until after it is
biopsied.
All women should
perform a monthly Breast Self Exam (BSE). Having a benign
fibroadenoma does not change this. Any changes or new lumps
should be brought to the attention of a physician.
